check out the lastest free release from vancouver's own vincent parker. the first three tunes in particular are exceptional. slower grindy extreme-sidechaining dreamy stuff that builds with a nice moving intensity and has some interesting very "live" (cuz they are) sounding changes. you can get a real feel for how these tunes were all recorded live off the floor. download respecanize here.

A TRIBE CALLED RED

A Tribe Called Red is a collective formed by three Native djs from Ottawa, the two-time Canadian DMC Champion DJ Shub, DJ NDN and video-artist Bear Witness. They have created a signature style known as PowWow Step, a mix of traditional Aboriginal pow-wow drumming and vocals with modern powerful Electronic and Club music. A Tribe Called Red have blown people away with their amazing music videos which are re-appropriating popular culture imagery of Native Culture by flipping around symbols. Onstage, they are doing live remixes of their own tracks, mixed with Pow Wow music, Poetry and Hip-Hop, while the visual aspect completes the performance. Their party mixes are eclectic, smart and will always get the audience going. They have already received big props from FADER, Mad Decent, MTV Iggy, Generation Bass and Masala who have just released their first original single this summer.

MICHAEL RED

Michael Red is a music producer/performer, DJ, and event organizer. Originally from Halifax, NS, and based out of Vancouver, BC, since 1998.

As founding member of Lighta! Sound, and having played and/or helped organize the majority of Vancouver's major dubstep events 2005-2009, Michael's played a pivotal role in shaping the city's internationally recognized dubstep scene. Previous to Lighta! Sound, Michael made solid contributions to the city's live ambient/idm/experimental-electronic community through event organizing, and performances under the name 'Souns'.

As a dancehall and reggae DJ, Red was a long time resident at the
legendary 'Bruk Out' weekly, and is currently a regular at 'Thursday Ting' and 'Anza Reggae Madness'. Influences include: dub, bass, fire, water, thunder, cultivating light and clearity, community, real life, authentic communication, universal justice and heart, and laughing and being stupid.

Prison Garde is the new working musical moniker of Vaughn Robert Squire. A man of many passions and creative outlets (he currently works as a Gallery Curator, Creative Agency Director, Graphic and Motion Designer, Soundtrack and Short Film Producer in addition to the more obvious DJ/Producer/Remixer titles). He strives for a balance between Arts and Industry / Crafts and Culture / Music and Mayhem in all his creative pursuits.

Founder of Montreal's most notorious party franchises (Bridge Burner, Turbo Crunk) while maintaining a steady string of appearances at nights such as Cassette (N.Y.) while headlining at festivals such as Mutek, Decibel, L.O.L.A, Nuit Blance, SXSW, NXNE, etc, He is no stranger to rocking crowds worldwide with a midi controller, laptop and synth.

Robert found himself in Vancouver a little more than a year ago and hit the ground running, working with Alex 'Rhek' Usow and Mark Brand as his partners, opening the Gastown-based Catalog Gallery (home to Catalog Pirate Radio and Catalog Creative Agency) he also has found himself in (yet another) moniker / musical change.

Prison Garde is a more club friendly + sexy take on the music he was doing under the Megasoid moniker, and it is additionally a collaboration with himself and light/film artist Peter Hagge (who helps to contribute visual content to provide a seamless time-sync'd A/V experience in the live performance setting).

Expect a Nouveau Palais EP for spring on a label you all should be familiar with (shhh!) and a string of Prison Garde releases to follow shortly after.

CALAMALKA

Calamalka is an artist that develops and progresses through the times, from his early years as a drummer in punk and hip hop hybrid bands to his current live p.a. sets that are a mix of heavy bass, minimal off kilter beats and future funk. Calamalka has released records and remixes with labels such as Plug Research, Metatronix, B.E.A.R. etc.. and continues to work with the Lighta! collective of which he is a original core member. Calamalka has
performed recently with the likes of : Kode 9, Hudson Mohawke, Onra, Benga, Pole, RSD, Eskmo, Falty DL, Machine Drum, Slugabed, Illum Sphere, Blue Daisy, Synkro, Lunice etc.. and has played at note worthy festivals such as: CMJ NYC, All Tomorrows Party's and Red Bull Megahurtz.

Niña is the best kind of DJ. A perfect balance of musical snob and open minded DJ she rocks parties with a ton of finesse and direction. She simultaneously respects music's history and pushes new sounds with an encyclopedic knowlege of good music, great dj skills and a fantastic wardrobe (hah!).

Her recent appearances at shows such as Hudson Mohawke, DaM-FunK, Onra, Lazer Sword & Jimmy Edgar have firmed her position as go-to-mood-setter for avant/beat nights. Expect an eclectic set that will span from old Classic Electro to Boogie to 80's Soul to R&B and Modern/Sexy Laptop Heaters, before eventually screaming with excitement before nights end. She loves music. She plays it well.

SAMMY CHIEN

Sammy Chien is an interdisciplinary media artist who seeks to merge cinema, sound art, new media and dance performances techniques into a new individual practice. His background is in experimental film, electroacoustic music and digital technology. Sammy frequently collaborates both visually and aurally in multi-disciplinary projects range from film, dance performance, improvised audiovisual performance, live electronics, concert, theatre, video installation, art exhibition and interdisciplinary collaborative-performance. In the past year, his work has been featured in Canada, India and Taiwan. His closest collaborator is his older brother Shang-Han, who is a visual artist and graphic/communication designer. Outside of the rigorous art world, Sammy VJs & DJs for art shows, bars, underground parties and concerts.

this edition's presenters are..

DIALECTIC

Dialectic is a musician and producer from England, where he developed his eclectic musical influences (ranging from Jazz through Northern Soul, Reggae, Ska, Dub, Blues, Funk, Acid House, Hip House, Drum & Bass and Techno), in the clubs, festivals and raves of the 80's and 90's. His music combines the euphoric melancholy of first generation Detroit Techno with the driving, modulating basslines of Acid House and the atmospherics of Ambient Dub. Dialectic's performance background began with DJing, although he quickly found making his own music, using a combination of guitar, effects, sampling and synthesiser programming provided a more satisfying outlet for personal expression. He has released a number of albums on his own record label, Dialectic Productions. As well as performing live and recording his own music, Dialectic holds a Masters degree in Audio Production from the University of Westminster, and has taught professional courses in engineering, production and recording.

Come out to the Little Mountain Gallery to see some video art works in a
cinema-like presentation on Thursday December 16th. We have a dynamic,
thought-provoking, visceral and meditative series of videos for this night,
featuring works by Victor Ballesteros, Rok Oblak, Kajin Goh, Soressa Gardner,
and Ross Birdwise.

The videos are sequenced like a DJ mix, with an engaging flow, that creates
interesting resonances, continuities and contrasts between the works, as well as
a satisfying overall impression.

Expect to see, among other things:

Heavily cut-up and layered videos of people singing in shifting lighting
conditions. A translation of audio processing techniques into video processing
techniques, as part of a search for novel and unexpected relationships between
sound and image, as well as a durational exploration of different kinds of
mobile lighting and light positioning on mobile subjects. These pieces are
inspired as much by electronic music, vocalists such as Meredith Monk, Ami
Yoshida and vocal forms such as overtone singing, as they are by the temporal
theories of Gilles Deleuze and Henri Bergson and an ongoing investigation into
the meaning of the 'portrait'.

Hovering figures eerily suspended in Malaysian alleyways at 'Forbidden Hour',
the transitory and brief period of dusk between night and day, light and dark,
when restless spirits awaken, bats begin their hunt, and dreams take on new and
more volatile meanings. The ‘Forbidden Hour’ signals the end of ‘rational’
activities and introduces the arrival of night, the awakening of the
unconscious, and the rousing of the spirit realm...

Intense, phenomenological, near psychedelic explorations of bicycling sounds and
spinning bicycle wheels, an experiment in contrasts between multiple audio
perspectives and a single video perspective, blurring together a single space
with multiple times...

Ross Birdwise is an artist and musician originally from Ottawa. His artistic
practice includes electronic music, vocal music, non-idiomatic improvisation,
performance art, photography and video. He has performed at the Mutek Festival
in Montreal, with Anthony Braxton in Vancouver (Sonic Genome - The Roundhouse)
and has shown visual art in a variety of contexts including Gallery 101 (Ottawa)
and Vancouver New Music (Theatre for the Ears - Scotiabank Dance Centre). He
obtained a BFA from Ottawa University in 2005 and an MAA from the Emily Carr
University of Art + Design in 2008. He has trouble separating his hobbies from
his creative practices.

Víctor Ballesteros obtained an MAA from the Emily Carr University of Art +
Design in 2009. His recent collaborative projects have been shown at the
Vancouver New Music Festival 2010 and Squarewaves Festival 2010. He currently
lives in Vancouver.

 SILKIE is a dubstep producer and DJ from West London. He released his debut LP City Limits Volume 1 in July 2009 on highly-reputable DEEP MEDI MUSIK, a label run by MALA (one of original builders of the dubstep movement). He was personally chosen by Mala, along with collaborator Quest, to represent the growing global bass scene in Mary-Anne Hobbs’ live mix showcase Generation Bass in September 2008 on BBC Radio 1, two-and-a-half years after the seminal Dubstep Warz.

Raised in the Parisian suburbs in a mixed-race family, Malilone found an escape from reality through music and chose to live life the way she wanted. With a background of multiple genres throughout her life : from rock and new-wave to electronic music such as synth-pop, minimal techno, jungle, house, disco and 90's hip hop, Malilone’s productions have helped express her inﬂuences and incorporate her emotion into the dubstep tempo we all love. Wanting to persue music as a career, Malilone took the next step and started studying sound engineering going on to work as a sound technician, which helped her transition into creating her own sound. In 2002, she started djing, practicing at home and local raves, she has since gone on to play in cities from Paris to Berlin. Surrounding herself in music, she then worked in A&R for Universal Music, where she learned the ins and outs about the music business and a better understanding about the technical side of music production.

Malilone production has seen support from producers like Matt-U, Von D and Bunzero as well as featuring in countless shows and mixes, as well as received high praise from the authorities at boomkat.

Chris Longshanks has been the longtime resident of one of Victoria’s most successful parties: SOLID! Saturday @ Lucky Bar. Chris helms the SUBDIVISION ship, who are by far the most consistant with bringing new club sounds to Victoria’s dancing masses.

Longshanks’ recent re-invention as one of Victoria’s ambassadors of bass has led to some amazing live performances alongside Flying Lotus, Excision, FaltyDL, Hrdvsion among other international performers. Moving from DJing into performing modular live sets using Ableton incorporating his own productions, Longshanks’ live sets traverse a myriad of genres, from 2step to dubstep to live hip-hop remixing. In 2009, he struck up a creative connection with Portland-based Run Riot Records, having 2 of his own productions released with plans for more later in 2010

[ TOMAS JIRKU ] rivers of / force inc / intr_version / alien8 // van

Tomas Jirku was discovered in 1999, when he sent out two demos to (then strictly online label) No Type director David Turgeon, who immediately invited him to join the label. Through a limited CD-R edition of his first web album, Immaterial, his music reaches the ears of Alien8 co-director Gary Worsley, who signs him on the spot. Meanwhile, Tomas had started a very special project on No Type, called Variants: regularly, he uploaded, changed, deleted tracks. All in all, nearly sixty tracks were composed this way. The eponymous disc (on Alien8) features 12 of these tracks and obtained great popular and critical success.

Hot on the heels of Variants, Tomas Jirku was invited to the first edition of Montreal-based festival Mutek, where he opened for the well known German minimalist Thomas Brinkmann. This show was such a success, Tomas was immediately invited to release a CD on the prestigious German label Force Inc: Sequins. This CD was followed with a “reworked” reissue of Immaterial, on new Alien8 sublabel Substractif.

As he became increasingly in demand, Tomas performed in numerous live shows, in Canada and across the world. New music was released on various compilations (Clicks & Cuts 2, The Freest of Radicals, Elektonische Musik Interkontinentale 1 & 2) as well as on many 12” singles. He could also be heard remixing artists such as Process or Electric Company. Finally, he released the Entropy CD for Montreal-based label Intr_version. The following year was dedicated to collaboration, with a GI Joe Killaz album (a silly gangsta hip-hop project featuring the famous cartoon characters), as well as a more serious project with his accomplice Robin Judge, which yielded the CD Plusism on the Onitor label.

i met their singer, Mariam, in Gothenburg last spring while playing a show with Tanya Tagaq. Mariam was dj'ing in between sets a was pulling out some of the freshest and amazing selections i had heard in a loooooong long time. making blends between current indie, old weird rock, roots dub, straight sound art, and some very cool swedish stuff i had never heard before. i found out only AFTER the show that she was a part of wildbirds and peacedrums, and i just happened to be checking their music out for the first time, literally, just BEFORE the show started. small world.

after hosting FENNESZ in september, WESTERN FRONT continues with some top choice programming, bringing TIM HECKER to vancouver november 19. LOSCIL is scheduled to open. as long as the bar is set up from the start and a few windows can stay open (was a little too hot at the fennesz show), this should be another not-to-be-missed show for fans of ambient music and the audio chin stroke.

Distance's recorded output is also formidable, finding homes on labels as underground and seminal as Hotflush, Destructive and Boka in his early career, to ending up on the world reputed Planet Mu, on which Distance released his debut album in 2007. Also that year he started his own stable, Chestplate. A label set up with the intention of showcasing the freshest of his own productions which have been destroying dances and flooring radio listeners ever since. After just a handful of releases it is already established as one of the increasingly few, 'buy-on-sight' dubstep labels. The onslaught looks set to continue with the recent announcement of a second full length album for the unstoppable Planet Mu label. Highlights of his production repertoire include 'V'; a track as heavy as 100 ten tonne trucks that pounds and stomps, crunches and growls. It has torn up dancefloors worldwide since it's dubplate debut and is a perfect example of a track that showcases Distance's fraught and angry production style. Conversely another Distance classic, 'Feel Me', oozes something far less overtly aggressive; all motorik hypnotik groove and ring modulated synth squeel. Distance's studio has spawned multiple stone cold killers over a range of styles but all uniquely Distance, highlighting why his new releases are some of the most highly anticipated in the scene.

Q: ey ey ey. how's things?

What kind of things?

Q: what's going on for you these days? (current and future projects and stuff)

I've got a vinyl release coming out October 7th on BadmanPressRecordings (DZ's Label) - Criminal Youths / Mud Up - BDM04, as well as a digital release of a 4 track EP on Badman also, the DreaderThanDread EP with the tunes DreaderThanDread, Raverz, Steamclock, and Da Flex. This one is my first piece of vinyl, so I feel really good about it. I've been in the studio a lot these past few months and have been tapping into all kinds of different tangents, so expect a great deal of variety from me in the next little while.

Q: what else are you excited about these days?

I'm pretty excited about Jamaica. I'll be going with Tank Girl to JA in November to stock up on dubplates, and to collaborate with some of the amazing artists it has to offer. I'm also working on building a plethora of electronic devices for audio purposes. Monosynths, delay/reverb units, tube amps and preamps, midi controllers, and other various modular thingamajigs. The focus with these being high fidelity analog circuitry, as well as aesthetically pleasing chassis and hardware for said items. Lots of etched brasss and copper, and nice wood. Most modern electronic instruments and processing look like shit. I hate plastic.

Q: for those unfamiliar, can you give us a run down on your musical history? what brought you to where you are now..

I started out getting my hands slapped by a horrible wench of a piano teacher, when I was 8, and moved on to sloppy metal on guitar and less sloppier metal on drums in my early teenage years. I got well into Nine Inch Nails and other such industrial music as well as the warp records lot, Aphex Twin, Squarpusher, Autechre etc. and became interested in synthesis and drum machines. I got a copy of ReBirth 1.0 for my Dad's office computer. Windows 95 I believe. Gross. Early acid was a big influence here obviously. I was around 14 when I started making shitty beats on computers. Around this same time, I went on vacation to the caribbean with my family during the slow part of the winter for a few years in a row. This is where I started developing my intense love of reggae music and when I started growing little dutty locks, lick the ganja etc... Obvious next step was ragga jungle. I was shocked and amazed that someone had combined reggae and dancehall with a hard fast broken beat. I worked at a shit job and over a year saved enough to buy some 1200's and a crappy mixer. I would go to toronto about once a month and buy a new record or two. Crack-like vinyl record addiction continues... I came to Vancouver in 2002 and was playing a lot of ambient / IDM / etc... Enter Michael Red and Jamie Abugov. More of that. Started playing some shows around here. Live PA and DJ. I went to Burning Man and got caught up in the west coast womp womp thing for a minute, then heard some Dizzee Rascal tune and went mental for grime, which lead to garage and dubstep. Kept making loads of crappy beats on computers. I got some nice analogue hardware later on and now I make slightly less shitty sounding riddims. Wow... I wonder if anyone is going to make it this far through my rambling?

Q: how would you define musical taste and musical snobbery? do you think there's a difference? or any other thoughts around the subject?

I fully support musical snobbery in every way. It's quality control. It just makes sense, and makes all music better as a whole. If something is bollocks, let it be known. Musical taste is a term for people who like bad music to justify it to themselves and others. Like when there's those stoners that say " nah man, you just haven't heard the good trance..."

Q: you have any thoughts or opinions around the idea of "the shift"/human evolution/2012/some sort of apocolypse/etc/etc?

I'm not sure yet whether I should run for the kootenays and start stockpiling food in a bunker and listening to democracy now, or if I should be building a mad max style urban assault vehicle with a flamethrower and practicing my swordfighting skills. Either way it's going to be an interesting next few years. There's a part of me that really hopes for full bore anarchy and mayhem. Humans have become way too domesticated. I also hope for increased electromagnetic activity within the ionosphere and harnessing this potential will be part of "the shift".

Q: what goes on in your brain? what kind of regular thoughts go on in there?

I think mostly in bleeps and bloops and other silly noises. I'm my brain I'm constantly drum soloing, with some space reserved for thinking about what I will eat next, and cute girls.

Q: how do you feel about homophobia in dancehall and reggae music world? and how about overtly violent subject matter, aka "guntalk"? any thoughts or opinions on the subject?

I don't even want to touch upon the homophobia thing. It's a religious based ideal set and religious people, for the most part,

cannot be reasoned with no matter how obviously misled and ignorant their belief may be. Violence in reggae and dancehall is only half literal. A great deal of violent lyrics actually refer to things such as soundclash competition, where if someone sings "we're going to murder you" they aren't necessarily going to physically attack you, but kill your sound in the clash, in the dance. Fassies tend to have violent words directed towards them in a lot of tune, but this is also non literal, because essentially, any fassy is not going to be any kind of threat, so there's no need for any actual physical actions towards dem. This being said, Jamaica is truly full of badman dem, and dem carry machine, shoot first, and ask questions later.

Q: just how important is it to burn out the bad mind, wicked heart and grudgefull?

Bad mind people must get burned out. Fire burn a wicked heart man dem with no regrets. Purification of irie vibes is key to the happiness of all good people.

Q: name a few things that piss you off.

The tragic deconstruction of the marvelous future of possibilities that was the genius inventions and discoveries of Nikola Tesla. Computers that don't work when they should. Any mechanical or electrical apparatus that is not performing it's intended function as it was made to do. Burn dem. The extreme lack of decent quality food to eat in the middle of the night in Vancouver. Toasters that don't toast the bread on the first go. Noise complaints in the city. Turning it down.

Q: name a few things that make you happy.

Many subwoofers stacked in a large array. Reggae music playing through said subwoofers. The combination of the two previous things outdoors. Kitties. Ice cream. Fast internet. Vinyl records. Analogue Synthesizers. All my amazingly fantastic, cute, talented, and loving friends. Spicy foods. Going fast on a bicycle. Boobies. Good espresso. Adventures. Raccoons.

Q: any advice for new and upcoming dj's and producers in vancouver?

Be original. Don't try to sound like anyone else. Don't try to jump on a bandwagon or do something because other people are doing it. Create your own sound and your own following, and do it for the music not for any other reason, especially money (because there isn't any.) Don't redline the dj mixer. Tell everyone how awesome you think you are. Don't pester the shit out of the producers and DJ's you look up to.

Q: any advice for established dj's and producers in vancouver?

Stop raving so much and stay home and work in the studio as much as possible. Be very organized. Don't ever stop eating/breathing/living/sleeping music. Quit your day job, if you have one.

Q: jungle or dnb, or does it matter? how do you describe the state of jungle right now?

Jungle. It matters. The state of jungle right now is a ghost of 1993-1997 golden era tunes. It's an everlasting quest for those rare vinyl pieces that come up on discogs for 60 quid a couple times a year. It's a burning fire that is alive within a few that still care about it's legacy. Jungle seems to have room to breathe right now because dnb is busy ruining dubstep.

Q: how do you describe the state of the dubstep scene in vancouver currently?

What can you say about any scene, seen? Any movement, whether it be a style of music, an artform, or fashion, goes through a transformation as it grows in popularity and size. The more humans having involved inspiration towards a specific genre or creative process, the less interesting it becomes because humans love to seek the approval and acceptance of their peers, and to do so, they often feel like the way to do that is to emulate what they see around them. The problem with this is that there ends up being a lot of half assed efforts being put into the mix, thus making it more challenging to find the root, and introducing mediocrity into the picture which leads to cynicism which in turn leads to change. I feel like the Vancouver scene in in the middle of that change right now. New boundaries are being pushed and a more experimental approach to production and sound design is at it's prime time to be welcomed. Big tings a gwan.

Q: what's next? (in the dj music world)

I feel like there's going to be a lot more happening in the 145-155 bpm tempo and the 115-125 bpm tempo. Some sort of mash up of garage/hardcore/juke/jungle/house. More swing. Less quantize. Grime. Proper ragga jungle too, and hopefully less auto-tune in Jamaica.

how about a short list of favourite music producers right now?

XI, Terror Danjah, Falty DL, James Blake, Africa Hitech, Addison Groove, Sepalcure, HxdB, Fantastic Mr Fox, Daega Sound, M Red. Taal Mala.

Q: if you had an unlimited budget and where going to throw a party, what would it look like? (location, line-up, sound, extra frills, etc,

whatever.. )

Ok.. this is going to be absurd, but so much fun. If anything goes, I would do a free multiroom party at the windsor castle, that includes airfare from any city of your choice anywhere in the world. There would be enormous stacks of funktion one sound in each room as well as a stack of several MacCauley M421 to fill out the low end. Free hospitality of outrageous proportion. I think that if there were lots of tesla coils everywhere, that would be quite alright, Each artist would play for minmum 2 hours, and would rotate until no one wanted to play anymore.
